FMP – character design research

moodboards here;

my main point and place of research was pinterest in terms of character research and influences, that way i could create moodboards out of the most relevant images collected

ive also looked into multiple books on the matter, though im still working on looking more deeply into concept artists individually and specifically .

Game Design – Characters

concepts

i had sketches in my notebooks of the concepts of this character and i scanned them and digitalised them at home, creating small concept busts of remy before i finalised the concept.

I had developed a basic concept in a smaller notepad allready but i wanted to expand on that, hence these four final cut down concepts exist. I played around with his gender a bit too but ultimately decided male since the other character would be female. I’m not the best with varying clothes but i wanted to see if deviating from his original clothe set was a good idea, since different types of clothes could fit within his personality easily.

when it comes to hair i struggle a little which is why the variation with that is more…restricted, but i wanted to try playing with colour and length regardless of this. art style and eye colours were things i wanted to switch around as well.

Character designs/Retro research – Hw

  • artofthetitle.com

my two characters are part of a world in which scientists created a giant formula, using various animals DNA, to try and create a cute for most flus and animal spread diseases in humans, instead it gave humans animal body parts whether it be horns, tails, ears or fangs, they created enough of it to spread it round the world, into the water systems, through clouds and as a gas in some cities and areas. Now that the world is covered in these unchanged hybrid humans, the scientists locked themselves away in their base in the middle of nowhere once the outrage started, refusing to make an antidote.

essentially, the games basis and end goal is to get to the scientists[end] level and cure the world of the “disease” {it works similar to the first rayman game – sidescroller}

Character One; Remy {Reh-me} LaMode / M / Wolf Hybrid / determined, bubbly, smart / quick-witted, small build=fast / neg; naive, not too strong, clumsy

unnamed

Character Two; Sandra {Saan-drah} Berks / F / Alligator Hybrid / quiet, grumpy, impatient / stronger build, very strong / neg; lack of strategy, not as quick, snappy

unnamed-1

[crash bandicoot] – [mariokart] – [broken age] – [the walking dead] – [Ib]

crash bandicoot{the original series} was created in the 90’s and is only available to play on the playstation platform, not pc or xbox. i love this game so much because its a unique series of  3d platformers which also includes partial sidescrolling on some levels. the game works like so; you control a bandicoot named crash, using the joystick to move forward, backwards, left and right, other abilities you gain are jump, double jump, spin and an ability where crashe bellyflops{to break crates and such}.

the visual style of crash bandicoot is very pleasing, the colours for the levels are never an eyesore and usually blend beautifully and look very natural and are not distracting from the gameplay. the character design doesnt clash with the background or terrain either, easily standing out enough.

the story of crash bandicoot is well thought out and flows easily throughout the game, cutscenes and small character clips helping in places that the game is unable to. the character designs are quite unique, allthough cortex could be seen as generic for a scientist, the way he acts and his personality and motive is interesting, he is a clear villain and this is made easy to see by his colour scheme and voice given. crash is a very simplistic protagonist in terms of design, and it works! he has few colours, most if not all of which are natural and any unnatural colours arent too bright, his design overall keeps things simple so its easy to follow him through the levels.

[crash bandicoot] – [mariokart] – [broken age] – [the walking dead] – [Ib]

mariokart{wii} came out in the early 2000’s as a continuation of the mario nintendo series and another update to the mariokart series onto the new console. i like this game because its just about the only racing game i find fun and mariokart changed the course of racing games forever, i think. the game works like any other racing game but with tweaks, you choose a racer and a vehicle of theirs to race in, the classic type of gameplay is included{turns, swerves, using items, accellerate}

the visual style of the game is extremely cartoonish, as all nintendo mario games are. the colours are vibrant and exciting, especially for the kids which the game is usually targetted at{though its known for the adult community who love it as well}. the style being cartoony and fun keeps a lighthearted and exciteable vibe in the game as you play.

the character designs are cartoony, unique and colourful, allthough the backgrounds are also bright the characters are always coloured differently and have various shapes and accessories included, every outfit is different in some way and the colour schemes for each character vary, they are very child friendly! the background design is very semi realistic, real life nature is taken and slightly cartoonised, changing the style alltogether, colours are brightened and shadows lightly added, the visuals are pleasing to the eye and even though theyre soft and bright they dont distract from the main racers.

[crash bandicoot] – [mariokart] – [broken age] – [the walking dead] – [Ib]

broken age is a beautiful point and click puzzle and adventure game for the pc which came out in 2013. i like this game because the story is neat and the visuals are stunning, also im a sucker for puzzle point and click games lmao. the game controls are very simple, you click a spot to move there, click on things to interact with them and/or pick them up, drag them to other things to give or intercact.

the art style for this game is gorgeous and i personally love it to death as well as its smooth animation sequences, the two main characters have very distinct differences from skin tone to colours used on their clothes, they come from very different lives so this isnt a surprise. colours used for all the characters are soft and of a darker tone, the only bright things are usually accesories or special clothes and items.

the story is very interesting since its two different timelines flowing at the same time that slowly intercross and connect, the two characters each start with their own stories, slowly building up into how they cross. the story is very interesting and flows, you actually help the story progress slowly.

the backgrounds almost always use darker tones and blending to keep the background subtle on the eyes and to keep the focus on the people and characters moving in the environment, its a very sketchy style.

[crash bandicoot] – [mariokart] – [broken age] – [the walking dead] – [Ib]

telltales the walking dead is a story choice game mixed with various elements of gameplay, mostly being cutscene and story based and quick time events. the gameplay is based on moving through environents and interacting with objects when the option is available. quick time events are usually used in a very atmospheric scene or part of the game. i love this game because its storytelling is incredible and the art style is so pleasing to look at,, cell shaded and like a comic book come to life, the characters are also very easy to get attached to.

the story is told through a slow episodic method that is very effective so it gives time to get to know the characters around your character and the protagonist themselves, it flows slow but smooth. the character design is what youd expect from an apocalypse setting, dark colours and dirtied clothes, all characters are vastly different in personality and physical type. they take it a step further by adding characters of all age to make it realistic.

the backgrounds are very realistic, if they were cartoonish they wouldn’t suit the dark nature of the game, or its style. the game gives off the vibe of a moving comic, so as you would expect the backgrounds are very comic like with heavy cell shading. the colours used in the backgrounds are always dark or a duller version of a brighter colour which enhances the tones of darkness and sadness

[crash bandicoot] – [mariokart] – [broken age] – [the walking dead] – [Ib]

Ib is a horror rpg game from 2012 and it has a unique style and story as well as many puzzles and riddles to solve. i love this game because its style is unique, and i adore pixel art, also the idea and setting for the game is very engaging. the gameplay is like any other horror rpg, arrow keys to move left right up and down, space to select and escape to view inventory, save, party members etc.

the story of ib is intreguing, you play as 9 year old ib who goes to an art gallery with her parents, after viewing a specific painting she gets transported to a warped version of the gallery where everything is alive and her life force is attached to the rose, its quite a unique idea for a game, especially of this sort, it allows for many puzzle opperunities and character introductions.

the character designs are surprisingly plain compared to the other life in the gallery, their colours are usually dulled tones of bright colours, each character has a specific colour that represents them, for example ibs is red, which is shown in her design and her life forces representation. the background design is dulled and darkened, to differ from the actual gallery you start off in, mostly greys and browns, especially on the walls and the colours darken in the dangerous situations.
